It feels like the past few years have been one giant uncertainty after another, this health crises, wars, political unrest, and so many other things. Tensions are definitely running high in these uncertain times.

It’s easy to feel anxious, overwhelmed, or just plain scared right now. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel the vice-like grip squeezing my chest with each shallow breath. But the other night, as I laid awake in bed nearly suffocating from fear of all of these unknowns and how it will affect my life, but more importantly the lives of my children, I realized something:

I can either let fear control my life, or I can let God control it.

Honestly, He’s the only one who knows how this will play out anyway. And worrying about it, while arguably unavoidable, does not serve us in any useful way.

So as I started praying for peace and comfort with all of the uncertainty, I decided to also crack open the Bible to see what God himself has to say about fear, worry, anxiety, and uncertainty.

Turns out, he has a lot to offer on the subject! So if you’re also feeling anxious with all of the uncertainty going on in the world right now or if you're struggling with fear and anxiety over other issues, take heart.

Here’s what God says to us during times of uncertainty or anxiety:

Joshua 1:9

I command you: be strong and steadfast! Do not fear nor be dismayed, for the LORD, your God, is with you wherever you go.

Psalm 55:23

Cast your care upon the LORD, who will give you support. He will never allow the righteous to stumble.

Psalm 56:4-5

When I am afraid, in you I place my trust. I praise the word of God; trust in God, I do not fear. What can mere flesh do to me?

Psalm 62:6-9

My soul, be at rest in God alone, from whom comes my hope. God alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not fall. My deliverance and honor are with God, my strong rock; my refuge is with God. Trust God at all times, my people! Pour out your hearts to God our refuge!

Psalm 112:7

He shall not fear an ill report; his heart is steadfast, trusting the LORD.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, on your own intelligence do not rely; In all your ways be mindful of him, and he will make straight your paths.

Isaiah 41:10

Do not fear: I am with you; do not be anxious: I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through waters, I will be with you; through rivers, you shall not be swept away. When you walk through fire, you shall not be burned, nor will flames consume you.

Jeremiah 29:11-12

For I know well the plans I have in mind for you—oracle of the LORD—plans for your welfare and not for woe, so as to give you a future of hope. When you call me, and come and pray to me, I will listen to you.

Zephaniah 3:15-16

The LORD has removed the judgment against you, he has turned away your enemies; The King of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst, you have no further misfortune to fear. On that day, it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, Zion, do not be discouraged!

Matthew 6:25-27

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat [or drink], or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they? Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span?

Matthew 6:31-32

So do not worry and say, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear?’ All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.

Matthew 6:34

Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil.

Matthew 11:28-30

Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.

Luke 1:13

Do not be afraid… because your prayer has been heard.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.

Romans 16:20

Then the God of peace will quickly crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.

Philippians 4:6-7

Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:13

I have the strength for everything through him who empowers me.

2 Timothy 1:7

For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control.

1 Peter 5:6-7

So humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your worries upon him because he cares for you.

See, no matter what happens, God’s got this! So as I sit here with you in scripture, the heavenly scent of chrism essential oil (affiliate link) diffusing in the background (does anything smell better than freshly baptized babies?!), these words provide comfort.

They also remind me of the wise words of St. Padre Pio:

“Pray, hope, and don’t worry.”

Yes, these things are easier said than done. But I challenge you to choose to listen to them. Calm your heart in this wild storm and rest in God’s word, even if only for a few precious moments.

Take care, sweet friends, and stay safe + healthy. You’re in my prayers!
